Zoo Tycoon-2 Endangered species

About a year ago Microsoft Games released the second iteration of their zoo simulation, a fairly polished game with a charming presentation and decent gameplay. It did have a few shortcomings and annoyances, but the new expansion pack titled Endangered Species fills in a few of these irritations while giving you more to do and more to decorate your zoo with.

For those who haven't played the original, Zoo Tycoon 2 plays out pretty much as you'd expect it to, given its title. At its core it is somewhat of a God game, while allowing you to literally get down into the dirt and handle things yourself if you wish to.

The game plays out in a series of campaigns, each with their own objectives and rewards. These do a good job of teaching you the various game mechanics, which is useful if you wish to be successful in the challenge or freeform modes. Challenge mode lets you choose the map type from a formidable set of choices, including desert, alpine, scrub, and wetlands. Next, you choose the amount of money you want to start with, and click start. Once inside you start with a challenge at the easy difficulty. This might require you to get a certain animal within a certain timeframe - say a month or two. If you complete this you usually get money, a reward, and fame. If you fail you'll be punished somehow.

When Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts announced that he was leaving Origin Systems, fans of his games were concerned that he had abandoned the space simulation genre. In 1999, those concerns were replaced with eager anticipation when Roberts announced that his next game, Freelancer, would be one of the most ambitious space simulations yet. But then Roberts left the project, and gradually several of its more innovative features were scaled down or dropped altogether while its target release date was constantly postponed. Freelancer has finally arrived, and while it's not the revolutionary title it initially promised to be, it delivers the exact combination of addictive and accessible gameplay that the genre has needed for a long time.

The character animations and cinematics in the single-player game are well done.

One of the most distinctive features of Freelancer is its control scheme. Perhaps in order to appeal to a broader audience than die-hard simulation fans, the game eschews the use of a joystick altogether and instead offers a simplified mouse-and-keyboard interface. While other space sims have allowed the use of a mouse to emulate a joystick's functions, mouse control in such games was generally a poor alternative. Freelancer, on the other hand, was designed with the limitations and advantages of that input device in mind, and as a result its mouse control works efficiently and actually enhances the gameplay.

James Bond 007: NightFire

NightFire takes inspiration from several of the best 007 moments across the years. In the completely original storyline, the super-spy finds himself on the trail of a corrupt businessman who's hatched a plan to use a secret weapon to destroy the world. Bond's quest to stop the terrorist before he can do any harm takes him across the world through a variety of stealth and action stages, deep into the ocean, and soaring into space. Most of the game (including the four-player multiplayer mode) is played in the first-person perspective, but there are also racing action stages that utilize the Need for Speed game engine.

James Bond is pitted against megalomaniac Raphael Drake, the world's largest green-industrialist and the president of Phoenix International. The goal of Phoenix International is to rid the world of unnecessary nuclear weapons and power plants to cleanse the environment. However, Phoenix International is soon suspected to be connected to the theft of a ballistic weapons guidance microchip that was meant to be part of the USSWP, or the United States Space Weapon Platform. When Bond starts to investigate the Japanese branch of Phoenix International, he learns of the true purpose of the international corporation: to carry out a decades-long, secret operation codenamed "Nightfire" that when completed will drastically redraw the lines that separate the countries of the world along with their governments, and plans to take over the world by taking control of all global corporations.
